Northwest Folklife
Deepti Designs was recently invited by Humanities WA and the Center for Washington Cultural Traditions to participate in the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. Seven artists, namely Charu Kilnani, Harini Thiagarajan, Guhan Thiagarajan, Aditi, Tanvi Mathrubootham, and Satvi Mathrubootham displayed their artworks, and two of them, Harini and Tanvi did live painting. It was the first time we did live painting at an event and it was a huge success. Visitors were amazed by the artists work and the focus and perseverance it takes to finish a huge painting, such as Kohbar. The hands-on activity for the visitors included supplies to make their own wooden bookmarks decorated with Madhubani Designs, which was enjoyed by kids and adults alike. The booth was bustling the whole day, with visitors watching the live painting or participating in hands-on activities. It’s a very exciting opportunity for us to present and showcase our art form to a larger diverse audience. Learn more about the event here.

Featured Artists
This month we are featuring two young artists that have recently finished their projects. Mahathi Barrenkala and Mahima Kolar.
Family of Deer by Mahathi Barrenkala
Mahathi: “My name is Mahathi and I am in 8th grade. I did this painting because I wanted to mix the environment of Washington with Madhubani to make the painting different. Rather than making a single deer, I decided to paint a family to show the bond between members of a kin.
Kali by Mahima Kolar
Mahima: “My name is Mahima Kolar. I am a rising 6th grader at Lakeside School, and I have been learning Madhubani for about 5 years. For my “Scene from Scripture” project, I painted Goddess Kali, an avatar of Goddess Durga, in the raging aftermath of her victorious battle with the Asuras. According to legend, her mighty wrath could only be calmed when her husband, Lord Shiva lay in her path. This scene depicts her coming out of her raging trance when she steps on her husband and bites her tongue in embarrassment.”
Congratulations to both artists for taking another step forward in their Madhubani Art journey.
